Comments

I saw this quilt by an unknown quilt maker at the Ima Hogg exhibit at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in 2006 when I was a docent. In 2008, I saw a reproduction fabric of the exact centennial fabric on the Internet and bought four yards. This year, I went with a group of friends to the Varner-Hogg plantation where the quilt is kept. I measured the blocks, the sashing, border and method of construction. The reproduction fabric was about 1/2 inch larger which required some adjustment in the size of the blocks and sashing. Although a simple design, the quilt requires attention to the on-point setting since the sashing is cut in long strips in one direction. The original quilt was made in approximately 1876 and was machine-pieced and machine-quilted. I kept thinking of the original quilter who did not have long rulers, rotary cutters, design walls or an electric machine. I am happy with the result!
