This is one of Mary Huanani Cesar's Hawaiian applique patterns. Fabric was hand-dyed by Marit Lee Kucera of Artspoken Yardage, St. Paul, Minnesota. The kukui tree is a very important plant first brought to the Hawaiian Islands by the ancient Polynesians. It can grow up to 85 feet and produce up to 100 pounds of nuts a year. The tree trunk was used for making canoes. The inner bark makes a reddish brown dye for tapa cloth, while soot from the burned nut makes a black tattoo dye and paint. The kukui nut and flower were used by ancient peoples to treat a wide range of illnesses and injuries. The kukui tree is also called the candlenut tree because oil from the nuts was used for lighting.
