This pattern from the book William Morris in Applique, by Michele Hill is an interpretation that William Morris' wife Jane embroidered for a 17th century four poster oak bed at Kelmscott Manor in England. The original pattern had a straight edge, but Jan Graetzel, the maker of the quilt, turned it into a scalloped edge. Yards and yards of bias strips were used for the rope borders, with 400 starts and stops by the longarm quilter, just for the knots. Appliqued flowers, sprays and birds are outlined with blanket stitch, using silks threads. The wool batting and dense quilting gives dimension.
