As an avid birdwatcher, I love watching birds around my backyard feeder. The Carolina wrens, cardinals, and tufted titmice are delightful to watch and photograph. Using photos of my favorite birds, I painted each bird separately on white cotton using Tsukineko inks. After backing with stabilizer, each bird was heavily thread painted. Also based on my photos, the treed background was painted on white cotton with Jaquard and Pebeo textile paints, over a school glue resist to save highlights. The birds were then appliqued over the background using invisible thread, with some added padding for a trapunto effect. Additional thread painting and free motion quilting were added to the background. Two-sided, free motion stitched leaves were attached to the branches. Feathers were printed onto the border fabric using Decolourant Plus discharge paste. If only all the birds got along so well together in real life!
