My quilting mentor started her version of Karen K Buckley's Indian Orange Peel pattern and talked me into taking the journey with her. I was a relatively new quilter, used to working in repeated pieced blocks, with established color combinations. This quilt was a true challenge for me and I learned about paper-piecing, curved piecing, and about letting go of my strict ideas about color by piecing sections from a wide palette, and then assembling them into a pleasant color combination. The quilt took about 5 years for me to complete. Frequently, it would exceed my skills and I would set it aside until I could learn how to do an especially difficult bit, like assembling the border sections. My mentor and I have ended up with very similar quilts, both beautiful, but each with our own twist on the basic colors we shared while we worked. |
