I have traveled a lot over the last ten years or so and have marveled at all of the many similar patterns and motifs that one finds the world over. The designs found in the floors of Italy, Greece, and other European countries; mosaics in San Marcos; carvings in Austria; Moorish designs in Egypt and Spain; as well as beautiful ironwork, doors, windows, and other adornments are ubiquitous. It is fascinating to me how many of these motifs are found in our traditional quilt and applique designs as well. Often, upon returning from one of my trips, I am excited to try to incorporate some of these motifs in my quilts. This quilt, "Alhambra," was inspired by the beautiful Moorish palace of the same name, located in Granada, Spain. The geometrics of Moorish patterns are fun to replicate and the colors of the quilt remind me of the richness one sees in the ancient world.
