The theme of the 2010 show and sale is “Changing Gears.” The Austin Area Quilt Guild is honoring the rich history of quilting, yet changing as we anticipate the future of quiltmaking in the 21st century.
We are dedicated members of a shared quilting community, a familiar tradition in our cultural history. Our community has been blessed with rapidly changing technology and an explosion of new products and tools. We have grown to accept more diverse quilt designs, subjects, and executions. Our quilts represent the incorporation of these new technologies and products within familiar quilt traditions.
Sometimes change in life is large and obvious and some of life’s changes are more subtle, but there nonetheless. So it is with our raffle quilt. There are large, obvious “gears” in the traditional Storm at Sea piecing, represented by color placement as well as the quilted design. The original quilting pattern uses traditional circular lines and motifs in a modern application that represents and enhances the interconnected pieced gears. The various sizes and design of the pieced and quilted gears push and pull your focus as your eye flows across the quilt. The less noticeable, but still important gears in color and quilting reinforce and reflect the “Changing Gears” theme of the quilt.
