Comments

The quilt was inspired by the print of an oil painting by celebrated artist John Patrick O'Brien. O'Brien was known around the world for his romantic paintings of Parisian neighborhood cafes, Italy, and Irish life. After obtaining permission from Martha O'Brien, the artist's widow (John O'Brien died in Petaluma, California), the image was divided into four sections. The sections were pieced by individual quilters: Sherri Grant, Joan McKelvey, and Ava Turner. A variety of techniques were used. The most difficult part was finding fabric with colors that matched - first the painting, then the other colors selected by the other quilters. Small modifications were made to the images by the quilters. The name of the cafe was changed to Cafe Mercredi. Mercredi is the French word for Wednesday which is found in the name of the group. If you look closely at the picture in the frame over the blue bowl, you will see a photo of the quilters who worked on the project. The final quilting was done by Sherri Grant on a long-arm quilter.
