My mom was the first to start teaching me to sew. My fourth grade teacher introduced me to quilting by helping some of us to hand-piece squares during recess. Then I took sewing classes as part of Home Economics classes in junior high and high school. Finally, while in college I saw Eleanor Burns on TV demonstrating strip piecing. I was definitely intrigued and made a small project on my own. About 1995, I found Gem Fabric, a quilt store that use to be located in what's now the Lakeline mall area. I finally took my first introductory quilting class there. Next, I nervously joined the Quilt Sitter's Circle where we made a round robin quilt. All of us in the group were probably nervous about sewing on each other's quilts, but it was fascinating to see all the different quilts take form. So I started this quilt by making the center card tricks block and first round of blue and beige borders. Then each member of the group sewed on a new border to create the quilt you now see. This was one of my most ambitious projects and created so early in my quilting days. Completed 2013. |
