This quilt is based on my photos of milkweed plants and hummingbirds in my yard. As a birdwatcher, it was fun to see that this plant attracts hummingbirds as well as butterflies. After enlarging my design, I created a pattern of leaves out of commercial prints and batiks which were fused to the background for machine applique. I separately printed a pale version of enlarged birds and flowers using my printer. After backing with stabilizer, these were heavily thread painted with cotton and rayon threads. These were then machine appliqued over the leaves using clear thread. Free motion quilting was done throughout in a pattern resembling leaves and feathers. Depth was added to the scene by painting shadows under the elements using Tsukineko fabric inks. |
