Comments

I liked the quilt-play of pieced baskets surrounding the appliqued floral basket in the center. I have long wanted to do a traditional applique basket design. The primary background, the greenish beige fabric, was a piece of Daiwabo Japanese fabric that I have had for quite a while. As odd as it seemed to be a background for an applique, I think it worked out beautifully for this quilt, showing off the colors of the spring flowers perfectly. I wanted the pieced baskets in the border to not overwhelm the center, therefore I used the colors in those baskets quite sparingly, drawing the eye of the viewer to the center which is where the focal point of the piece should be.

Techniques

Hand Applique. Hand Embroidering. Machine Piecing. Machine Quilting. Paper Piecing.

Design Source

Mary Sorenson, center applique block; the 3 bugs were taken from another Mary Sorenson design, "Simple Gifts."Pieced baskets were printed from EQ quilt baskets, paper pieced, and modified as to color placement.
