I liked the quilt-play of pieced baskets surrounding the appliqued floral basket in the center. I have long wanted to do a traditional applique basket design. The primary background, the greenish beige fabric, was a piece of Daiwabo Japanese fabric that I have had for quite a while. As odd as it seemed to be a background for an applique, I think it worked out beautifully for this quilt, showing off the colors of the spring flowers perfectly. I wanted the pieced baskets in the border to not overwhelm the center, therefore I used the colors in those baskets quite sparingly, drawing the eye of the viewer to the center which is where the focal point of the piece should be. |
