This counterpane was originally started over 80 years ago by the maternal side of my family. The embroidery was started in Illinois by my great-grandmother and grandmother. The completed top travelled to New Mexico with my mother who kept it safe and dry for many years. She bequeathed the counterpane to me with my promise to turn it into a completed quilt. To complement the beautiful embroidery, I selected a peach and lime sherbet colored fabric to construct borders to take it to a size for a modern bed and to frame the flower basket. I started design discussions with Terre Walker in 2008 on how to complete this. Terre and I came to a design agreement in the Fall of 2009 and the quilting work began in early 2010. The quilting background was inspired by the work of Karen McTavish, the feather work by Linda V Taylor, and the center quilting motifs by Helen Squire. It is also important to give Ricky Tims credit for teaching Terre his technique to make corded bindings. The quilt's home is now Texas and I consider it to be a true legacy to my family's creativity.
