Over the past three years the laughter of Katie McClellan and her best friend, Dotty Hougen, has echoed through the Texas Hill Country as they hopped from shop to shop collecting fabrics and piecing, piecing, piecing. They spent every opportunity possible working on their individual quilts of similar design whenever they managed to get together. Although inspired by the same pattern, Scraps to You by Debbie Caffrey, they ended up with two very different quilts, each a reflection of its owner. Katie and Dotty were intrigued by this pattern because it involves the use of only one quilt block, Birds in the Air, but can be rearranged for a variety of overall quilt designs. A Plethora of Purple, shown here, is the result of the hard work that Katie invested in her creation. The use of purple in her personal quilts is one of Katie’s trademarks. Kim Peterson of Scrap Happy Quilting quilted this piece. The joy and laughter that took place while this quilt was pieced is evident through the use of the vibrant colors and creative organization of the quilt blocks.
