A friend allowed me to use her c.1885 quilt to reproduce using current fabrics. The original maker used such a playful arrangement of the lilies, turning stems and leaves various ways. Not only that, she lay some on their sides, while others are sitting straight. To fill the edge with a striped fabric that did not coordinate with anything tells me she must have been a free spirit. Had the owner not allowed me to have the quilt in my possession, I would never have figured out the setting and stem arrangements of the blocks.
